Since it was mid-week, traffic on 66 was only nightmarish, not a complete shit show. Once we got past Falls Church it even picked up. March figured out that if he closed his eyes when I passed a car, or someone passed me, or I had to hit the brakes, or went into a curve, or basically drove the damned car, it cut down on his anxiety by a lot. Plus I told him I'd pull over and make him walk if he didn't stop gasping. Once we got off 66 and onto 15 there was a lot less traffic, and I think he finally relaxed enough to enjoy the scenery; farms, cows, some estates at the tops of hills that looked like doll houses, and a few times, horses.

"They're pretty, aren't they?" I said. I was curious about his other life, and didn't quite know how to bring it up. I didn't want to hurt his feelings. Horses are unicorn-adjacent, right?

He gave a shrug. "If you like that sort of thing."

"Sure. So. Um, when was the last time you turned into a person? If you don't mind my asking." He knew such a strange mish-mash of current mortal life, I figured it couldn't have been that long ago. Elevators but not cellphones. Therapists but not Kardashians.

"Lots of times," he said. "When I found I was bored, or I wanted to listen to music. Or the company of mortal creatures. Many times."

"But do you know when, like what year? I mean, can you answer that question?" My money was on the late 70s.

"I. . .I know what you mean—my mind knows what you mean, but I didn’t think that way before." He looked at me helplessly. "I don't know. I'm different now. In my head." He ran a hand through his hair. "My thoughts are different. One thought right after the other." He was definitely getting torqued.

"It's okay, don't worry about it. I was just curious." I turned up the radio. "Do you know this one?"

"Firefall," he said, and relaxed back into his seat. "Just remember I love you and it'll be all right." He closed his eyes again and listened without moving.

Memory and time, she said. Memory, time and love.
